Behind the App
Building Pocket: Why We Made a Banking App Look Like This
Every finance app we tried felt like it was mad at us. So we built the one we actually wanted to open.

Early on, we pulled up ten of the most popular banking and budgeting apps side by side. Nine of them used almost the exact same visual language: dark navy or forest green, serious sans-serif type, a lot of numbers, very little warmth. The tenth used slightly brighter navy.
That was the moment the direction for Pocket became obvious — not because bright colors are inherently better, but because an entire category had converged on "serious" as the only acceptable tone for something that's genuinely stressful for a lot of people.
Serious isn't the same as trustworthy
There's an assumption in fintech that looking corporate signals safety. We don't think that's actually true for most people — especially people who've felt anxious or overwhelmed by money their whole lives. A cold interface doesn't make your money safer. It just makes the app harder to open.
Why illustration instead of stock photography or plain numbers
Illustration lets us show concepts — a goal, progress, a habit forming — without needing a wall of text to explain them. A jar filling up communicates "you're making progress" faster than a percentage ever could. That's not decoration. That's the interface doing its job.
Why we kept security boring on purpose
The one place we didn't bring the playful tone was the Security & Trust page. That was intentional — the parts of the product that need to earn trust fast (encryption, FDIC insurance, data handling) get a calmer, more direct tone, because that's the moment people actually want facts, not personality.
The bet we're making
Fun and serious aren't opposites. You can take someone's money seriously and still make the experience of managing it feel less like homework. That's the whole premise Pocket is built on — and honestly, the reaction so far tells us a lot of people were just waiting for someone to try it.
Is Pocket free to use?
Yes! Pocket Basic is completely free and includes spending tracking, automatic categorization, savings jars, and weekly check-ins. You can upgrade to Pocket Plus anytime if you want more advanced features.
Is my money safe with Pocket?
Absolutely. Your funds are held by our licensed banking partner and eligible deposits are FDIC-insured up to $250,000. We also use bank-grade encryption and continuous fraud monitoring to keep your account secure.
Do I need to switch banks?
No. You can securely connect your existing bank accounts and start tracking your spending in minutes. If you choose, you can also use Pocket as your primary spending account.
How do Savings Jars work?
Create a jar for anything you're saving toward—whether it's a vacation, a new laptop, or an emergency fund. Set a goal, turn on round-ups or automatic transfers, and watch your progress grow over time.
Can I freeze my card?
Yes. If your card is lost or you notice something unusual, you can instantly freeze or unfreeze it directly from the app without calling support.
Can I cancel anytime?
Of course. Pocket Plus is a monthly subscription with no contracts or cancellation fees. You can downgrade to Pocket Basic whenever you like.
What devices does Pocket support?
Pocket is available on both iOS and Android, with secure cloud sync so your data stays up to date across all your devices.
